Still on a textile tip - US based Ian Hundley uses the ages-old (and often female) tradition of patchwork to re-create aerial maps that he finds in books. The resultant pieces, to me, are like giant abstract paintings, though wonderfully tactile with that quilted uneven surface.

What interests me particularly is his use of colour... there must be some kind of meaning or intention behind his palettes... city or urban centers are often brightly multi-coloured, while the surrounding landscapes and river systems are harmonious or gentle tones and patterns.

Something else that I find intriguing is that patchwork in general was (and is still) so often used to tell stories, document architectural structures and record family histories... in a way Hundley is still doing this with his use of patchwork. Enjoy toucans!!

As you know I have been pursuing some textile sculpture ideas of late.. mainly those that have to do with the manipulation of a single thread. I have come across this rather amazing lady from the US who is just.. well.. inspiring to say the least. Most of her work uses the public environment as a canvas on which to imprint her incredible textile forms and with the use of light at night and, sometimes manipulating the physical environment, there's a lil' bit of magic that occurs.
Structurally speaking the thread is netted together, similar to that of a dream-catcher, and suspended in numerous ways usually with the aid of large metal circular shapes within the pieces and huge supports strategically placed around the outside. Guerilla + endorsed public artist / sculptor guru: Will Coles.
The man is simply incredible-borderline-genius and here is a whole post dedicated to him.

I love the way his mind works and you'll see why as you scroll down and look at all these pictures. He has the ability of being able to capture banal, mass-produced and aggressive elements of modern Western society and its ideals, while simultaneously creating f******* beautiful objects of art. He incorporates rather 'Eastern' notions and aesthetics of peace and minimalism all the while using the medium of concrete; the epitome of greyness by all definitions. Definitely one to watch. Look out for his pieces placed around Sydney... apparently there are more coming very soon!

This one, above, to me describes the ability of large entities, like Disney, to damage or kill off the potential for imagination and individualism... of course, not all kids' film suffocate in this way. However they really do subliminally shape our values and ideals, sometimes with a negative gearing and where, really, we could have imagined something else more unique and of true value.

YES dammit YES!!!! see here? see the simple smack in the face tru-sim? 'I miss you'... probably because I spend so much time bloody texting you that I never get to actually talk to you.

Will Coles tuning into some silence.

And now below are some pictures of his work interacting with other public art pieces in Sydney. Directly below is a piece on the Macquarie St side of the Botanical Gardens.

Above is a piece down in the Rocks near the piers / wharfs / Sydney Theatre Company etc. Mr Coles has placed his friendly box atop the rock. Below is a piece in Newtown where he has adorned the structure with little plastic soldiers... now they are playing a 3D World of Warcraft!!

And finally, in tribute to Anzac Day, he has created this soldiers head and bust and placed it on the vacant plynth near the Devonshire St entrance to Central Tunnel. You can't really see from this image, but the soldier has 20c coins over each eye (a tradition the ancient Egyptions(??) bestowed upon their dead, so that they had money in the afterlife), as well as tape over his mouth.. alluding to the fact that, perhaps, this soldier has not been allowed to tell his full story. A very poignant and hard hitting piece, but necessary and amazingly executed. Check out his website and flickr for more on these pieces and others.

Exciting yes it is!!! Sydney is getting a brand new piece of permanent public artwork being opened tHIS WEEEEEEK!!!! The work Aspire is by professional light-based Australian artist Warren Langley. Here is a pre-visual of the piece to be opened:

It's trees. Lovely big golden trees propping up the Western Distrbutor. Here is the official word from the Lord Mayer who is opening the work tomorrow night:

The work, by eminent Australian artist Warren Langley, features a forest of golden trees which stretch upwards and appear to keep the vast bulk of the freeway at bay. Internal environmentally friendly lighting, which I will switch on at the launch, creates their golden
hue.

The finished work recalls the combined activism of local community members who helped save local housing from being totally obliterated by the freeway and inspires and reminds us that we can all aspire to creating a better environment.

Now, you may remember Warren Langely from last years VIVID / Smartlight festival. He did the big ugly pot-vase full of 80's style flowers. It was a work that irked me to tears and I totally wrote him off as an ugly person.

HOWEVER, since I discovered he was repsonsible for this new work, which I actually really like, I was promted to look further into his past bits. Here are some pieces that I found that are, quite frankly, wonderful. And I am now reassured that even professional Public Artists have bad-hair days and put out complete doozeys. Ahhhhh, the humanity.

And lastly, a work by a different artist from last years VIVID / Smartlight Festival, who actually really nailed it and I felt compelled to include in this post because it is so so so so beautiful. Francesco Mariotti's work titled Fire Flies. The sculpture used low energy lighting and recycled materials such as PET bottles to create a poignant piece about the effects of urban lighting on the lifecycle of fireflies. MwaH! What a delicious use of medium to convey a message, and so perfectly captures the flitty, phosphuorescent light of a firefly.

FYI, VIVID is just about to launch its 2010 season minus the Smartlight component. I got an email which assured everyone that it will be back again next year. I hope so, it has so much growing to do and so much growing of artists in return.

Hello..! So this week I am putting up some randoms. Mostly Sydney based and some permanent pieces, though with a few other delicious treats thrown in.

Interesting... Al (my Reef Knot cohort) and I gave a little talk last week at the &Company design exhibition at Gaffa Gallery ( a FABULOUS show might I add). Our talk was titled 'Making Art to Engage the Public' and something we touched on was the potential or need for more permanent Public Art-making opportunities for artists who are going through the temporary motions available, like Art and About, Sculpture by the Sea, Sydney Festival, Festivals in general etc... These opportunities are educational for people wanting to practise Public Art as their chosen field of art and the next logical step is to go on to permanent pieces. Hmm. So that's a bit of my 2 cents for the mo.... !!!!! Anyway, here are some permanent pieces that Sydney has to offer.

Above is The Sunflowers (or I think that's what they're called). I can't find the name of the artist who created this piece so please feel free to enlighten me!!

This is kinda cool.. I feel like its a bit hidden though... or not partioculary sensitive to where it is. It would be great with a bit more space around it, so that the sense of things being precariously piled on top of each other ,about to wobble or fall, could be exaggerated.

The piece pictured above here is the lovely sound sculpture installation Wireless House. A collaboration between City of Sydney Council, sonic artist Nigel Helyer and the NFSA. This piece draws on the local history of the area in Glebe and how this house used to actually a wireless house!!A unique place for the community to enjoy listening to daily radio programmes, it operated from 1934 until the early fifties.

This was really clever. An advertisement for Ella Bache skin products, a play on 'peaches and cream' complexions I am supposing, it was down outside the MCA on the grass. I know, I know, its an ad, and its commercial and NO! NO! NO! a sell out! a sell out! But hey! Artists should be able to make a bit of moolla sometimes right? And its a good piece. Its engaging. It's a naked lady.

Ahhhh. Guerilla Gardners... my heros. This is (half of) the best peice I believe they have done to date. Its still there, on the median strip at Cleveland and South Dowling Sts. Viva la revolution!!

I don't exactly know what this is but it's in North Sydney. It's not the most amazing thing I've ever seen, but for some reason I feel compelled to include it. hmmm. Maybe its the ice-creamy vibe... it looks a bit like sundaes-with-sprinkles mock-towers and is slightly surreal. This is potentially an over-flattering photo, but who know's ay? Something to expand upon anyway, if anything!

This was a cardboard planetarium made by my beautiful friend Kirsten Bradley and was part of a series About Above in early 2008. She installed them in parks around the Sydney CBD and even put one near the Sydney Observatory!! You could stick your head inside, look up and observe a constellation from the Sydney night sky. mwah. It was so beautiful! And in her own words solar powered... BA HA HA HA!! get it? get it? the sun shone through the holes to make the starlights.

Jeff Koon's Puppy. Who didn't love it?? It was just so sad it had to come down. See what I mean? MORE PERMANENT PIECES!! Lets fall in love with stuff that can stay!

I found this while having a Google.... it was in the Customs House forecourt and I think its really beautiful. Kind of like a walkway-massive ribcage-treehouse.

Here she is....!!!!! The one permanent piece most Sydney-siders will go.... "I love it!" Brett Whitely's Matches outside the Art AGllery of NSW. And they bloody are lovely aren't they?

The best public art around. heh heh heh. ahhhhh.

"Produced by the City of Sydney, Art & About is already Sydney's biggest public art festival," said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.

Ok.. so warning!warning! this is a massive post!!!! I thought maybe I should break it up.. but nah! It's all lovely images so if you haven't got more than 30 seconds come back and view this later with a lovely cup of tea.

Now, every year the City of Sydney puts on and event called Art and About. This has bascially become the largest public art festival in Sydney and is always full of a mixture of innovation, creativity, traditional art as well as the avante-guard and performance.

Some quotes which I have found from Art and About artists are as follows:

What is the Role of public art festivals?
"They create a sense of community, and allow people to be involved in the creativity of the community they live in. They connect art and society, and people have so much to gain from being exposed to new ideas and art."
-Petrina Hicks won Sydney Life in 2004, and has since gone on to exhibit in Australia and overseas.

What does a festival like Art & About mean to you?
"The festival benefits the city and community greatly. It makes Sydney feel alive and in my experience it forces people to look up from their everyday life and see six hot pink dinosaurs roaming around the inner city. Now, that is surely a good thing."

So basically what we are looking at here are many many interpretations of impermanent public art in Sydney.. in fact a veritable feast! Art and About really tries very hard to engage both traditional and non-traditional art audiences, which is the absolute point of public art anywhere. Live Lanes, By George! is now in its 4th year running, kicking off in 2007 and growing steadily every year. The aim is to enliven Sydney's laneways that run off or near George St by means of re-invention. Community Project + installation

The Stables was a lovely lovely project.!! The brainchild of Annie Kennedy and commissioned by the City of Sydney council to be part of Art and About 2008. The role of horses and stables in Erskinville's history and community life were heavily referenced and interpreted by all walks of life, including children, at workshops. The results were displayed in shopfronts and as projections.

I Heart Kings Cross was a community based project commissioned by the Council and orchestrated by Reef Knot (which is half me and half Alasdair Nicol... no invested interests here!!!!!) All these amazing pictures were taken by my friend Matthew Venables.
I hope more projects like this happen as part of Art and About... their ability to invoke 'pride of place' is quite amazing. Something we wanted to do was transform the 'everyday' into something magical and precious as well as make real the idea of the 'social fabric' of a place. The Live Green House was included in last years Art and About at Taylor Square... it basically displayed as a walk-through sculpture-model of a sustainable house, with wonderful practical ideas for inner-city dwellers. A much needed source of information and very cleverly communicated.

The Open Air Gallery

The Open Air Gallery is one of my favorite parts of Art and About. It is such a brilliant and simple idea: allowing artists who work in 2D mediums such as painting or drawing, usually relegated to display in private galleries / indoor spaces, to have their work line the streets of sydney on flagpoles. Brilliant! The image above is one of my all-time favourites and is by Louise Hearman , part of Art and About 2007.

have not posted in sooooo longsies!!!!
anyway, so, public art. There is a lot of ground to cover, I have found, so I am breaking it all up into pieces. I thought a good thing to include is impermanent public art-focused events tha happen in Sydney such as Sculpture by the Sea (here and with an emphasis on 'sculpture') and Art and About (next week with a focus on art as well as community).

These events provide a great catalyst for public relationships with artworks and also allow artists a little more freedom as they do not need to consider the long-term necessities required by permanent works. They are a good testing ground to see what people respond to and also, in a sense, 'educate' people in relating to and interacting with public art. I have a theory that the more art you put out there the less likely it is that things will get damaged as people get used to having it around.

public art_ take one: the tone-setter

this week I am beginning my travelling enquiry into Public Art in Sydney. The reason for this is simple... I was at a party on the weekend and someone asked me "but what public art is there in Sydney? what's your favourite piece?" To which I was a little bit stumped. I mean there have been HEAPS of temporary pieces, and maybe at the end of this enquiry I will conclude that good public art in Sydney IS temporary, but nothing really permanent and in a really public space (I mean the Art Gallery of NSW and the matches etc are wonderful but I think it still classifies as the Art Gallery). SO! Here this blog here.

This first entry is obviuosly not Sydney-based stuff. In fact it intentionally excludes Sydney so I can get a feel of a global environment. This is such a tiny and biased selection that really would not stand up in court, but it shows the kind of thing I'm going to look for in Sydney.... modern sculptures, graffiti, architecture, statues, enormous, tiny, light-based, fountains, etc etc. I am also asking everyone to send me suggestions or favourites as we journey into the public domain and immerse ourselves in the glory of saying something publicly....with metal and fibre, enamel and stick. Standing nude in the face of laymen opinions. Pulling back the curtains on an enjoyable stroll through the urban dust. ahhhh. Off we go......

Louise Weaver is a lovely textile lady from Sydney who covers poly-styrene / mixed media animal forms with crotchet. A modern play on taxidermy crossed with an overall sense of whimsical beauty, she captures wonderful personalities. When I was posting images of Nathan Vincent's work the other day I was reminded of Louise. She shows her work at Darren Knight Gallery every year or two. Julie Green, who I used to assist in her cane-weaving, first introduced her work to me saying that I might love it... um. She was right!

Just a onesy for today... Joachim Knill. He's a photographer that really plays with incorporating collage techniques and textiles. This piece, aptly titled Bed Bugs, uses a really sumptuous colour / texture/pattern-palette and feels both tribal and nanna-crafty simultaneously. The creatures remind me of those big black things from the Dark Crystal. Totally bizarre and crazy yet beautifully done. Love.

my friend Anique, who is over in Berlin at the mo, sent me the link to this guy's site. Thanks Anique!!!! I frickin love this. I love the straight-forward feminisation of the male world, and I particularly love that the objects, in my opinion, remain masculine despite the textile medium. The crotchet causes the objects to become imperfect and wonky... particularly the chair + television... but what this does is give the sense of being used a lot and being well-loved... even the urinal. I guess this becomes slightly disturbing when applied to the guns and the animal heads, especially when they are such beautiful sculptures without any implied meanings... but to me that increases the depth of the artworks.

thought I'd put this up as I am up late and patching knitted pieces together.. a bit like this though maybe not so neatly...... Unfortunately I can't remember where I found this image.... but I do remember they had a special system set up so that pieces were knitted everyday based on information received.. like they were making a kind of map. I shall try and be a bit more specific once my brain comes back.

fantastic sculptural installation, Toss, by Nina Levy from Brooklyn USA... the figurative forms are modeled from clay and then cast in polyester resin treated with oil paint. I love the sense of animation and surreal.

I know I've already featured her Pyrotechnic paintings.. but I've been revisiting her website and found her 'Scrambler' paintings... farout! so amazing! what a lady!!

Here's what she has to say about her process:

"Good-Time Mix Machine: Scrambler Drawings" I connected a gas generator and air compressor to buckets of paint and secured them into the seats of a Scrambler amusement park ride. Once the ride was in motion, paint sprayed out of the benches onto vinyl tarps placed underneath. The result is a series of enormous hypocycloid designs which recorded the hidden patterns created by the ride as it turned.
Two videos were created in conjuction with the drawings.

I saw this as I was going past the Keeping Place in Redfern the other day... Its amazing! The word 'stolen' spelt out with milk crates. The reference to milk or nuturing is so powerful as well as it being a wonderful urban installation.

The Keeping Place is managed by Gordon and Elaine Syrons and is a stronghold of Aboriginal art being kept out of the clutches of bureaucracy and greedy poo-faces.

Toucan Dance

There was a queue of tanned toucans lined up on the blue sand
- so early it was still dew damp.
They were sculpting a nude man with their two wings which had evolved into two hands.
They ate goo-ham from a stew can while discussing the cinematography of Tulipan in comparison to their home-made porn on boob-cam.
A few jammed on the blue sand, dancing in a shoe stamp tune camp as the sunset fell with a hue grand enough to feature on the front page of a news stand.
